San Francisco Walking Tours

Saturday Walking Tours. San Francisco Heritage offers four public walking tours, given on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. from the historic Haas-Lilienthal House. Each tour covers approximately 15-20 blocks of the city’s eclectic and exciting neighborhoods and districts. Walking tours generally last about 2 hours. These 4 tours are offered on a rotating basis every Saturday:

FIRST SATURDAY:  “City Beautiful to Civic Center” Tour - This walk is the flattest of the four new walks, and is a comprehensive exploration of the Civic Center Historic District - one of the finest ensembles of Beaux Arts architecture in America - and why that style prevails in San Francisco. In addition to many beautiful buildings, this tour also covers quite a bit of public artwork. This tour does not start at the Haas-Lilienthal House, and requires reservations.

SECOND SATURDAY: “A Walk Along Broadway” Tour - This tour visits the area north and west of the Haas-Lilienthal House, covering a number of Victorian styles of houses along Broadway (including the “Mrs. Doubtfire” house) and numerous stunning Classical Revival buildings, including two of Silver King James Flood’s former mansions. This tour starts at the Haas-Lilienthal House.

THIRD SATURDAY: “Beyond Union Street: A Walk Through Cow Hollow” - This walking tour explores the early years of Cow Hollow through the distinctive architecture of the neighborhood, including early dairy farms, roadway inns, converted stables and barns, the exteriors of Victorian houses and mansions, and the grand art deco apartment buildings that replaced them. The walk showcases residential and commercial architectural styles from the 1850s to the 1920s. This tour starts at the Haas-Lilienthal House.

FOURTH SATURDAY: “Walk the Fire Line: Van Ness Avenue” - This stroll down to and along Van Ness Avenue skirts the 1906 fire line, and offers marvelous post-1906 architecture along and east of Van Ness Avenue, as well as a few outstanding pre-quake survivors on the western side. Learn about the infamous earthquake and fire, and the subsequent effects on the area, which evolved from being a grand residential boulevard to a high-style commercial row created to showcase that latest of modern conveniences, the automobile. This tour starts at the Haas-Lilienthal House.

Pacific Heights Walking Tour. Experience an illuminating two-hour tour of eastern Pacific Heights which includes highlights and illustrates San Francisco's diverse architecture and history, including stories of earthquakes, fortunes and fame. The Pacific Heights Tour leaves from the Haas-Lilienthal House every Sunday at 12:30 p.m., and last approximately 2 hours. [Top]
